Lesson Six
The Blueprint for Living
The teachings of Jesus must be obeyed.
Spirit-filled is about control, not feeling. We are the glove; the Spirit is the hand. Keep being filled, moment by moment; the Word and the Spirit work together.
Memory verse: But be filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18)
The bridge: Lesson 5 gave the power to live the Christian life (the Spirit). Lesson 6 gives the pattern for that life (Jesus' teaching). Power without a pattern is aimless; a pattern without power is crushing. Jesus is both: the fuel (Lesson 5, by His Spirit) and the blueprint (Lesson 6, by His word).
Jesus' teachings are not suggestions. They are the blueprint for every disciple, and obedience to them is the foundation of a secure life.
The corrective this lesson addresses: many youth view Jesus as Saviour (forgives sins) but stop short of viewing Him as Rabbi and Teacher whose commands must be obeyed. In Jewish culture a rabbi's disciples did not just listen; they lived with him and imitated his life. Jesus did not say "believe in me" first; He said "follow me." To follow is to obey. Frame the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) as the manifesto of the Kingdom, not a set of suggestions for the spiritually elite.
- Do you think Jesus gave us rules to restrict our fun, or to give us life? Why do people dislike rules?
- What is the difference between a rule that enslaves and a rule that liberates? 「
Scripture Exploration
Two passages. The first is the foundation: hear and do. The second shows the depth: obedience begins in the heart.
Read first — the foundation Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it."
- What is the difference between the wise man and the foolish man? Did both hear the words of Jesus?
- What is the critical difference? What does this say about storms in the Christian life?
Drive home the symmetry: both heard, both built, storms came to both. The only difference was the foundation: doing versus merely hearing. Trials, temptations, and crises reveal the foundation; they do not create it. A youth who hears sermons and Bible studies but does not obey is the foolish builder, however much they know. Storms come to both is also a comfort: obedience does not spare us trouble, but it keeps the house standing through it.
"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, 'You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire."
- Jesus takes the external law ("do not murder") and applies it to the heart ("do not be angry"). Why is the heart version harder to obey?
- What does this teach us about God's concern for our hearts, not just our actions?
The point: Jesus is not making the law easier by spiritualising it; He is revealing its true depth. The Pharisees congratulated themselves on not murdering; Jesus says the murder begins in the heart with anger and contempt. A youth can keep an external rule (no sex, no stealing, no swearing) and still be full of anger, lust, pride. True righteousness is heart transformation that flows outward into action. If time allows, briefly reference Matthew 5:27-28 (lust = heart adultery) as the same pattern.
Application 应用
The Bible is a mirror. You look in it to see the true state of your heart, then act on what you see.
Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.James 1:22 — Memory Verse
Step 1 — Look in the mirror. This week, read Matthew 5:23-24. There Jesus teaches reconciliation: if you are offering your gift at the altar and remember that a brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift, go first and be reconciled, then come and offer your gift.
Step 2 — See yourself clearly. Ask: Is there anyone I have something against? A broken relationship I have ignored? A word spoken in anger I have not apologised for? Write down one specific person or situation.
Step 3 — Act on what you see. Do not just read and move on. Jesus commands reconciliation before worship. This week take one concrete step: send a message, make a call, request a meeting, confess your part, ask forgiveness. Do not delay.
The sting is in the ordering: reconciliation before worship. Jesus says an unresolved broken relationship can hinder our very offering to God. For Singapore youth in tight families and schools, fractured friendships and parental conflict are common. This application is concrete and costly, which is exactly the point. Knowledge without action is self-deception (James 1:22). Offer confidentiality: they do not have to name the person aloud, only act.
Prayer & Commitment
Father, forgive me for the times I have heard Your words but not obeyed them. I have been content to know about Jesus without fully following Him as my Teacher and Lord. Break my heart for the ways I have compromised in anger, lust, dishonesty, and unforgiveness. Give me a heart that longs to obey, not just a mind that knows theology. Strengthen me by Your Spirit to do what You command. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Take one concrete step of reconciliation from the Mirror Exercise. Report back next week on what you did and how it went.
Takeaways
- Jesus is both Saviour and Teacher. A faith that does not lead to obedience is incomplete.
- Both men heard; only one did. Hearing without doing is the foolish foundation.
- Righteousness begins in the heart. Jesus transforms the inside, not just regulates behaviour.
- Knowledge without action is deception. Blessing comes from doing, not knowing.
- Obedience is the pathway to blessing. His commands are not burdens but invitations to flourish.
