The Road to Discipleship · Lesson 5 of 7

Lesson Five

The Fuel for the Journey

How to be filled with the Spirit. 怎样被圣灵充满。

~30 minutes Group session Scripture: ESV Glossary
Last week — Lesson 4 上周回顾

A fruitful disciple grows on four pillars, not one. Balance beats intensity; the weakest leg sets your stability. Word and Prayer are the roots, Obedience and Witnessing the fruit. 结果子的门徒靠四根支柱成长,而非一根。平衡胜于强度;最弱的一脚决定你的稳固。主道与祷告是根,顺服与见证是果。

Memory verse: I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. (Psalm 119:11)

← Back to Lesson 4: Staying Balanced

Leader's tip 带领提示

The bridge: Lesson 4 handed the youth four habits. Lesson 5 answers the obvious next question: "These habits are hard. Where do I get the power to keep them?" The four pillars are the structure; the Spirit is the fuel. A car with four good wheels still goes nowhere without petrol.

The Big Idea 核心要旨

Spirit-filled is about control, not feeling. We are the glove; the Spirit is the hand inside it.

「被圣灵充满」关乎掌管,不关乎感觉。基督徒生活无法单靠人的力量维持;被充满就是被掌管。我们是手套,圣灵是里面的手。我们的本分是交托,祂的本分是能力。

Leader's tip — frame this carefully 带领提示 — 务必小心定调

In our Brethren conviction, "Spirit-filled" is not a dramatic second experience, a special gift, or an emotional high. It is a control issue: are my thoughts, choices, and actions being governed by the Spirit right now? State this plainly at the start. Youth exposed to charismatic teaching may expect otherwise; anchor them in Ephesians 5:18 before anything else.

Key terms from the glossary: Spirit-filled 被圣灵充满, walk by the Spirit 顺圣灵而行, fruit of the Spirit 圣灵的果子.

Welcome & Check-in 欢迎与近况

Discuss 讨论
  • Have you ever tried to drive a car with no fuel? What happened? What is the fuel for the Christian life? 你可曾试过驾驶没有汽油的车?发生了什么?基督徒生活的燃料是什么?
  • When you hear "Spirit-filled," what picture comes to mind? Where did that picture come from? 听到「被圣灵充满」,你脑海中浮现什么画面?这画面从何而来?
Leader's tip 带领提示

The second question surfaces assumptions. Listen without correcting yet; you will reframe them with Ephesians 5:18. Note who has been taught an emotional/experiential view, so you can pastor them through it gently, not debate them.

Scripture Exploration 查考经文

Two passages. The first defines Spirit-filling as control. The second shows what walking by the Spirit produces.

Read first — filled = controlled 先读 — 充满即被掌管
Ephesians 5:18 (ESV)

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.

Discuss 讨论
  • Why does Paul contrast being drunk with wine and being filled with the Spirit? What do the two share? 保罗为何把「醉酒」与「被圣灵充满」对比?两者有何共通?
  • When someone is drunk, their judgment, speech, and actions are not their own. In what ways should Spirit-filling look similar in terms of surrendered control? 人醉酒时,判断、言语、行动都不由自己。「被圣灵充满」在「交出掌管」这方面当如何相似?
Leader's tip 带领提示

The one insight to land: both states are about who is in control. Alcohol controls the drunk; the Spirit controls the filled believer. "Be filled" is passive in Greek (let yourselves be filled) and present-tense (keep being filled). It is continuous surrender, not a one-off event. The measure of being filled is not emotional intensity but obedience.

Read second — what walking produces 再读 — 顺圣灵而行的结果
Galatians 5:16-17, 22-23 (ESV)

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other... 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Discuss 讨论
  • "Walk" implies steps. How do we walk by the Spirit in daily decisions? What does it look like to walk rather than sprint or stumble? 「行」意味着步伐。我们如何在日常决定中顺圣灵而行?「行」与「冲刺」或「跌撞」有何不同?
  • Are the fruit of the Spirit natural personality traits we can develop, or supernatural results of being filled? Can a person produce these alone? 圣灵的果子是我们能培养的天然性格,还是被充满的超自然结果?人能独自结出这些吗?
Leader's tip 带领提示

Tie this back to Lessons 3 and 4. Lesson 3 said "walk by the Spirit" as the way to say no to sin; Lesson 4 made Word and Prayer the roots. Now we see why: walking by the Spirit is what produces the fruit. Fruit is singular in Greek (one fruit, nine facets), and it is the Spirit's produce, not self-improvement. Note the contrast: the flesh and the Spirit are opposed (v.17); it is one or the other in any given moment.

Application 应用

Spiritual breathing is the daily, practical way to keep being filled. It is not a ritual; it is a rhythm.

But be filled with the Spirit.Ephesians 5:18b — Memory Verse

Spiritual Breathing 属灵呼吸

Exhale — confess and release control. Name any area where you have operated in your own strength: pride, anxiety, anger, lust, selfishness. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

Inhale — ask the Spirit to fill and control. This is an act of faith: "Holy Spirit, I cannot do this on my own. Take control of my thoughts, emotions, and choices in this area."

Practice right now. Take a moment of silence. In your heart: exhale one area you have been controlling yourself; inhale by asking the Spirit to take control there. 现在就操练。安静片刻,在心里:呼出你一直自行掌管的一处;吸入,求圣灵在那处掌管。

Leader's tip — the glove and the hand 带领提示 — 手套与手

Use the glove object lesson if you have one handy (an actual glove works). A glove cannot work alone; it needs a hand inside. We are the glove; the Spirit is the indwelling Hand. The glove does not resist the hand; it yields to it. That is Spirit-filling: not striving harder, but yielding more completely. The deepest joy and greatest power come from surrender, not effort.

Leader's tip — Word and Spirit together 带领提示 — 主道与圣灵同工

Close the loop with Lesson 4. Colossians 3:16 ("let the word of Christ dwell in you richly") produces the same results as Ephesians 5:18 ("be filled with the Spirit"). The Spirit fills us through the Word. You cannot be truly filled without the Word, and the Word becomes powerful only when the Spirit controls your response to it. The four pillars and the fuel are one system.

Prayer & Commitment 祷告与立志

Pray together 同心祷告

Holy Spirit, I surrender control of my thoughts and decisions to You today. I confess that I have tried to live this life in my own strength. Fill me. Control my choices, my words, and my actions. Empower me to walk in obedience to Your leading. Not by my will, but by Yours. In Jesus' name, Amen.

圣灵啊,今天我将我的思想和决定交给你掌管。我承认我一直凭自己的力量过这生活。求你充满我。掌管我的选择、言语和行为。赐我力量顺从你的引导而活。不要照我的意思,只要照你的意思。奉耶稣的名,阿们。

This week's practice 本周操练
  • Practice spiritual breathing once each morning this week, before the day's decisions begin. 本周每天早晨,在一天的决定开始前,操练一次属灵呼吸。
  • Pick one decision-point you expect today (a conversation, a study session, a screen moment) and pre-surrender it to the Spirit. 选定今天预期的一个决定时刻(一次谈话、一段温习、一个上网时刻),预先交托给圣灵。

Takeaways 要点回顾

  • Spirit-filling is control, not feeling. The measure is obedience and surrender, not emotional intensity. 被圣灵充满是掌管,不是感觉。尺度是顺服与交托,不是情绪的强度。
  • Keep on being filled. It is a continuous present, a daily and moment-by-moment yielding. 不断地被充满。这是持续的现在式,是每日每刻的交托。
  • Fruit is the Spirit's produce. Love, joy, peace and the rest are supernatural results, not self-improvement. 果子是圣灵的产品。仁爱、喜乐、平安等是超自然的结果,不是自我提升。
  • The Word and the Spirit work together. The Spirit fills us through the Word; the Word lands as the Spirit controls. 主道与圣灵同工。圣灵借主道充满我们;主道因圣灵掌管而生效。
