Lesson Three
Breaking the Chains
Victory over sin by choice.
Faith saves you, but surrender shapes you. Jesus is both Saviour and Lord; lordship is a daily choice, and "whatever you do" is the test of it.
Memory verse: Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Colossians 3:17)
The bridge: Lesson 2 said hand Jesus the deciding say. Lesson 3 answers the youth's unspoken question: "But I keep failing in the same areas. How can I say 'no' when the pull is so strong?" Many young believers know Jesus is Lord yet feel powerless against a recurring sin. This session says the chains are already cut; freedom is real and chosen, not automatic.
Jesus did not just save us from hell; He saved us from being slaves.
Sketch this on the board before the passages. It is the frame for everything in this lesson:
- Past — saved from sin's penalty (Justification 称义)
- Present — being saved from sin's power (Sanctification
- Future — will be saved from sin's presence (Glorification
Lesson 3 lives in the present tense. You are no longer a slave to sin; you have the power to say "no."
An honest icebreaker lowers defenses before a vulnerable topic. Keep it light, then go deeper in the Scripture section.
- Have you ever tried to break a bad habit on your own (diet, exercise, waking up early)? How successful were you on willpower alone?
- What does it feel like when you know something is wrong but the pull feels too strong?
Scripture Exploration
Two passages, both from Romans 6. The first shows what happened at salvation; the second shows how to live in that freedom.
Read first — what happened We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.
- What happened to our "old self"?
- What does it practically mean for you to be "set free" from sin today?
The key picture: a prisoner whose chains are already cut, yet who still walks as if shackled. The freedom is real and finished (v.6, "was crucified"); the habits of slavery linger. A youth is not fighting to become free. They are learning to live free. That shift in tense changes everything.
So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
- Verse 11 says "count yourselves dead to sin." Is this a feeling or a choice?
- If sin is a tyrant trying to rule you, what weapon do you use to say "no"?
"Count" (λογίζεσθε, logizesthe) is an accounting term: reckon, calculate as fact. It is not pretending; it is agreeing with what God says is already true. The choice is to act on the finished fact. Every temptation is a question: "Who is your master today?" The believer's right answer: "Not sin. I belong to God."
Application 应用
Victory is not about resisting harder; it is about replacement. The antidote to darkness is not fighting the dark; it is turning on the light.
Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.Galatians 5:16 — Memory Verse
Do it now. Is there a recurring sin or habit you feel powerless against? This is for your eyes only.
[ _______________________________________________ ]
Then turn it around. Paul does not say "fight your flesh harder." He says walk by the Spirit. Write down one positive, Spirit-led replacement for that area this week (a verse to run to, a person to call, a habit to build).
Replacement over resistance. A youth trying to "just stop" a sin by willpower will fail and feel condemned. Help them name the replacement: the moment of temptation has a God-honouring action attached to it. This sets up Lesson 5 (the Spirit-filled life) naturally.
Prayer & Commitment
Pray specifically. Generic prayers produce generic victories. Name the area.
Father, thank You that my old self was crucified with Christ and I am no longer sin's slave. I confess the area I have felt powerless in: [name it]. I count myself dead to that sin and alive to You. By Your Spirit, I choose obedience here this week. Not sin. I belong to You. Amen.
- Carry your one replacement with you (in your phone, your Bible, your wallet). When the Stop Sign area fires, run to the replacement, not away from the sin.
- Find one trusted believer to tell about this area by midweek. Chains break faster in the light.
Takeaways
- Identity shift. At salvation the chains were cut. A person chained for years may still walk as if bound, but the freedom is real.
- Count it true, then act. "Dead to sin" is not a feeling to summon but a fact to live by.
- Every temptation is a mastery question. "Who is your master today?" Your answer: "Not sin. I belong to God."
- Replacement over resistance. Victory is turning on the light, not fighting the dark.
