Lesson Two
Making Jesus the Lord of One's Life
Faith saves you; surrender shapes you.
Salvation is a one-time gift you receive; discipleship is a daily walk you choose. You do not work for salvation, but you must work out your salvation (growth).
Memory verse: Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:18)
Begin by asking two or three youth how the Psalms reading and their "next step" went. Keep it brief. The recap is the bridge: Lesson 1 said discipleship is a daily walk; Lesson 2 answers what does it mean to walk with Jesus as Lord? Name that bridge out loud.
Faith saves you, but surrender shapes you.
The pivot of this lesson is the word pair Saviour / Lord 救主 / 主. A youth can receive Jesus as Saviour and stop there; to receive Him as Lord is to hand over the deciding say. Make sure the group feels the weight of that distinction before you open the passages.
Build on the recap. These questions surface the gap between knowing Jesus as Saviour and following Him as Lord.
- How did your spiritual practice go this week? What felt easy or hard?
- What does Lord mean to you? How is that different from Saviour? 「
Expect fuzzy answers to the second question. Lord = master, the one with authority over my decisions. Saviour = rescuer, the one who saves me. Many youth happily take the rescue but resist the authority. That tension is the lesson.
Scripture Exploration
Two passages. The first gives the call to follow; the second shows the shape of a life laid down. Read each aloud, then work the questions.
Read first 先读And he said to all, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it."
- What does deny yourself look like in real life?
- What might taking up your cross daily mean for you?
Deny is not "deny yourself some things" (a small sacrifice); it is "say no to yourself" (the self no longer calls the shots). The cross in Jesus' day meant one thing: death. So "take up your cross" is not bearing a hardship; it is consenting to the end of self-rule. And note daily: this is not a one-time surrender but a morning-by-morning choice. This directly extends Lesson 1's "daily walk."
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
- What does it mean to offer your body as a living sacrifice?
- What is one area of life you find hard to surrender?
Two contrasts to draw out. First, the sacrifice is living, not dead: it keeps crawling off the altar, so surrender is repeated. Second, conformed (squeezed into the world's mould from the outside) versus transformed (changed from the inside by a renewed mind). Lordship is not behaviour management; it is mind renewal that reshapes the life.
Application 应用
Lordship is not abstract. The Life Areas Wheel makes it concrete: which slices have you handed over, and which are you still gripping?
Do it together. Draw a circle cut into slices. In each slice write one area of life. Then have each youth shade the slices they have surrendered to Christ versus the ones they are still holding.
- Which slice is most shaded (most surrendered)? Which is least?
- Where is Jesus inviting you to trust Him more?
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.Colossians 3:17 — Memory Verse
The memory verse is the test of lordship: whatever you do. A slice is surrendered not when you feel devoted, but when you can honestly say, "I am doing this in Jesus' name" (with His authority, for His honour, in a way He would own). The wheel surfaces the gaps; Colossians 3:17 names the standard.
Prayer & Commitment
Close with a surrender prayer, then commit to one concrete act of obedience for the week.
Lord Jesus, You are not only my Saviour; You are my Lord. I have held back areas of my life and tried to keep the deciding say. Today I present myself to You as a living sacrifice. Take the slices I have gripped too tightly. Renew my mind, that I may discern and do Your will. Amen.
Commit to one concrete act of obedience that shows Jesus is Lord of the slice you shaded least.
- Examples: forgive someone this week 本周饶恕某人; adjust your schedule to make room for prayer 调整时间表腾出祷告; bring your spending or screen time under His authority 把消费或上网时间交在祂的主权下.
- Write the one act on your wheel and date it.
Takeaways
- Jesus is both Saviour and Lord. Receiving the rescue while resisting the authority is an incomplete following.
- Deny self, daily. Lordship is a morning-by-morning choice, not a one-time decision.
- A living sacrifice keeps being offered. It crawls off the altar; surrender is repeated, not finished.
- "Whatever you do" is the test. A slice is surrendered when you can do it in Jesus' name. 「
