The Road to Discipleship · Lesson 1 of 7

Lesson One

Beginning the Journey

Salvation is a gift; discipleship is a walk.

~30 minutes Group session Scripture: ESV Glossary
The Big Idea

Salvation is a one-time gift you receive; discipleship is a daily walk you choose.

Leader's tip

The whole series turns on the contrast in this lesson: moment versus movement. Land this clearly and the next six sessions fall into place. If a youth cannot tell the difference between being saved and growing as a disciple, everything ahead will blur. Slow down here.

1

Open warmly before any Scripture. These two questions set the tone for the whole series. Let two or three youth answer each; do not rush to teach.

Discuss 讨论
  • How has your walk with Jesus been this week? Any wins or struggles?
  • What is the difference between getting saved and growing as a disciple? 「
Leader's tip

Listen for confusion between the two. Many youth assume salvation and discipleship are the same thing. That assumption is exactly what this lesson corrects. Take notes on what they say; you will return to it at the application step.

2

Scripture Exploration

Two passages, one pairing. The first shows how we are saved; the second shows how we work out that salvation. Read each aloud, then work the questions.

Read first 先读
Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV)

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Discuss 讨论
  • What does this say about how we are saved?
  • What does verse 10 say we were created for?
Leader's tip

Make the contrast visible: saved by grace, saved for works. Verse 9 kills pride (not by works); verse 10 fuels purpose (created for good works). Both are essential. A youth who hears only verse 9 becomes lazy; one who hears only verse 10 becomes anxious.

Read second 再读
Philippians 2:12-13 (ESV)

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Discuss 讨论
  • How do we work out what God has worked in?
  • What is one area where you want to grow?
Leader's tip

Notice the two verbs Paul marks: work out (our part) and works in (God's part). Growth is not us straining alone, nor God doing it without us. We cooperate. Verse 13 is the engine; verse 12 is the steering.

Application 应用

A picture is worth a thousand words here. Do the drawing exercise together. It is the heart of this lesson.

The Road 道路图

Draw it. On paper or a whiteboard, draw a single line across the page.

  • At the start, write Salvation 救恩. It is a one-time act. It is absolute: you are saved, or you are not.
  • From it, draw a long winding road leading to a house. Label this Christian Life 基督徒生活. This is a process. It requires walking.
Reflect 反思
  • Think back to the day you trusted Christ. How did you feel right after? How is that different from how you feel walking with God today?
  • Where are you on the road right now? Stuck, walking slowly, or running?
  • Write down one or two steps you sense God inviting you to take this week.

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.2 Peter 3:18 — Memory Verse

Leader's tip

The one line to repeat until they can say it back: You do not work for salvation, but you must work out your salvation (growth). Use the road picture to anchor it.

4

Prayer & Commitment

Close by thanking God for salvation and asking for grace to take the next step. Then agree together on one small practice for the week.

Pray together

Father, thank You that salvation is Your gift, not our work. We could never earn it. But we do not want to stand still. Give us grace to take the next step this week, to work out what You are working in. Grow us in the grace and knowledge of Jesus. Amen.

This week's practice

Agree on one small, shared practice. Keep it achievable so the group experiences a win.

  • Suggested: Read one Psalm each day this week.
  • Write the one or two steps from the Road exercise where you will see them daily (phone wallpaper, notebook).

Takeaways

  • Salvation is a moment; discipleship is a movement. Becoming a Christian happens once; growing like Christ happens daily.
  • Saved by grace, saved for good works. Works do not earn salvation; they are the purpose salvation was given.
  • We work out what God works in. Growth is cooperation: His power, our steps.
  • The road requires walking. A stalled Christian is not a lost Christian, but neither is a growing one.
